Hail to the Victors!

Happy College Football Saturday, everyone!

Hail to the Victors....all of them.

Can I tell you how much I look forward to today?  The bands, the tackles, the passes, the close calls, the bad calls, the fans and the craziness.

I love football season...here's to hoping it goes by SLOWLY.

Nerd Girl

Ahhhh, it's Friday.  Hunter's studying with Ashley and Will's at our first football game (or butt kicking as we kindly refer to it).  Jeff and I were lucky enough to get an evening of football, Little House and relaxation!  So I spend a good deal of time on Pinterest.  Oh, you know you would too.  What better way to spend free time than finding new projects, lol!  Anyway, a friend pinned this and it made me giggle.  It's so me.  Who new the boys had a Nerd Girl mom?  Anyone else out there feeling this way too?

The Sweetest Comeback...

The sweetest comeback in the history of ever.  I would have to agree.  It'll take me months to eat my way though them all (no worries, they'll last until I have great grand kids) but can I just say how happy I am to see an American staple return?  And yes, we just got them this week.  Our Kroger is a little slow!

Love to Learn

I love to learn.  I could have been a perpetual student.  So when I see things created, my first thought is "I could do that.".  Unfortunately, time is never my friend when it comes to taking on new projects.  But after months of watching others, I was determined to learn how to crochet.  I've tried knitting with needles and I didn't get to far.  I tried loom knitting and I love it...but I wanted to work with a needle.  So this week, I really tried to practice, focus and learn.  Here's my first finished project.  What do you think?

It's all about the music....

I remember walking though the music stores when I was a teenager.  Mountains of cassette tapes, all containing a song or two that would be played for weeks on the radio, endorsed by Casey Kasem.  I loved hanging out in there, listening to the Top 20 and seeing what was new.

Will will never experience that.  Since Itunes has the market on new music, stores will do anything to get you to buy them in advance.  IN his case, they'll give you extra tracks, cool boxes and even a t-shirt...just to get you to buy the actual CD.

He doesn't spend his money on much, but an Avenged Sevenfold release is worth a million to him.  So I'll let you decide...how do you like the shirt?  I love it!  It's far better than the music itself!

Yummy!

Is there anything good about having to appear in court?  Not generally.  Fortunately, Jeff's only had to make a few appearances on behalf of work, but they all seem to be hours away.  This time, it happened to fall just a few minutes from our favorite spot....Hocking Hills.  And if you go anywhere near Hocking Hills, you have to go to Mama Renie's.  I don't eat pizza, but Jeff says it's the best he's ever had.  That's got to say something!

So when Jeff said he had to leave the night before, Will offered to watch the puppies so I could go too.  So thank you, Will for my outstanding dinner.  I wish you could have shared it with us.  We'll make a stop for pizza in the Spring on our way to Ohio University!

How Long?

I couldn't spend the day with them, but at least they got to see each other!  Even if it was only long enough to take this picture.  How long until Christmas Break?  I think we all need it!

Happy Birthday, Abby!

We were lucky enough to be invited to Abby's birthday party today!  I know time passed quickly with the boys, but I think Abby's growing up even faster.  Double digits, oh my!  Yummy tacos, chocolate cake and ice cream, and presents.  But most importantly, it was an afternoon with family.  We don't get to do it often, so it was extra special.

I hope Abby had a wonderful party.  But I know that I came home with the best present of the day.  The picture that Abby drew for me!  Thanks for my wonderful gift, I hope you loved yours just as much!

For No Reason

Since I can't get into the studio to shoot today (thanks to a few hundred angry yellow jackets!), I thought I would take advantage of some natural light.  And since I have the best hubby in the world, I had the perfect subject.

I'm not sure if it was the bees, the wasps, the flying ants, the craziness, the work, back to school, end of summer stuff or if was just being thoughtful and sweet, but Jeff brought me roses.  It's a very special treat and I love, love, love them.  It's the "for no reason" flowers that mean the most.

Welcome!

Welcome Week is in full swing!  What that means is concert season has begun.  I have to admit, I was just a little jealous when they announced the Welcome concert would be The Band Perry.  Apparently, I'm one of their few fans since the uproar at OSU and here when Hunter found out was deafening.

But as I predicted...it was awesome!  Yee Haw!

Class is in!

Class is in session...again.  Yesterday it was Will.  Today, Hunter started his second year of classes at Ohio State.  Was it really a year ago that I was crying and terrified that neither of us would make it through the year?

Since I couldn't be there to take his "back to school" picture, he called me (on Skype) so that I could take it from here.  It was the best 15 minutes of the day!

Happy First Day of School, Hunter!

And thanks for making a minute or two for your mom :)

Tuesday, August 20, 2013

Oh My!

Holy crap, my baby is a Junior.  Yep, that's all I have to say...and I don't have a better way to say it!

Happy First Day of School, Will!

It's a school night....

It's a school night.  There, I said it out loud.  Will's ready to go, pens and paper are all packed up in his backpack (which he can't carry when he gets to school).  He's wandered the house for an hour now, not sleepy but rather excited.  He's going to be an upperclassman!

So let me share a story with you.  Since Will had to work tonight, I wanted to help him get all caught up and ready for his first day of school.  At his age, the only thing I could help with was his laundry.  Please note, I NEVER do the boys laundry.  They've been doing it for years and years.

And this is why I don't do the boys laundry.  See what I get for helping!  And when I asked Will when he had a hot dog...he looked at me with that "I have no idea" look.  There are some questions you don't ask twice...because you don't want to know the answer.

Life is Too Short

No, this is not a picture of my feet.  But it made me giggle all night.  Because I believe it to be the truth!  Anyone out there agree with me?

I was creeping!

Today was move in day at Ohio State.  I've heard they're fun, exciting and full of complete chaos.  Hunter always moves in early, so thankfully, we've missed them so far.  I'm sure that he's crazy busy today (nope, I haven't talked to him), but thankfully, his friends are nice enough to share a few pictures so I know he's alive and doing well.  Honestly, it's the best part of social media.  Being able to keep up with the kids without bothering them, lol!

LOL!

This is what "back to school" shopping with Will looks like!

Goodbye Summer!

It's official...Summer is coming to a close and Fall is starting to creep in.  It wasn't the 50 degree temperatures this morning that tipped me off...it was the sounds of brass marching across the football field.  Oh, how I missed the sounds of the fight song, the National Anthem and Moves Like Jagger.

And Meet the Band night is always good for a laugh or two.  A Freshman swinging the wrong way, knocking someone over.  The screech of a horn louder than the rest of the band.  But all I noticed tonight was Will.  A Junior.  His height wasn't what I noticed.  It was how much he looked like an upperclassman vs. the Freshman trudging across the grass.  And he tipped the tunnel!

I cherish nights like this.  I reminds me how blessed I am.  It warms my heart.  And if you haven't seen him in a while...he's the tall one that needs a haircut!

Top Ten

I haven't done a list for a while so I thought I would take a moment today to tell you the Top 10 jobs that I just wouldn't want to have.

10.  Mathematician (For obvious reasons)
9.  Statistician (Yep, it's a pattern)
8.  Line Cook (Unless it's for Gordon Ramsey!)
7.  Landscaper (Plants hate me, weeds love me)
6.  Florist (Oh, come on!  I'd die of an allergic reaction within a day!)
5.  High School Teacher (They're braver than I am.)
4.  The Guy (or gal) who repo's cars (Again, pretty obvious)
3.  Cab Driver (I'd make myself car sick!)
2.  Flight Attendant (I can't handle "stupid" on the ground, much less at 20,000 feet)
1.  This guys job.....

This is the wonderfully courageous man who sprayed the wasps nest today.  Sorry for the crumby picture, but there was no way I was leaving the house!  Five days.  That's how long I have to wait to see if they're dead.  If not, he'll be back.  And I'll still be hiding in the house!

A little time for me...

Yep, I'm posting it here too!  I'm so in love with it that I had to share it again!

There is a lesson in this purse too - in addition to the "you can never have enough of something you love" one.

Sometimes, you just have to stop everything and do something for you.  I've been so busy with the studio, the sewing shop, the custom tags, the house, the dogs, the kids...well, just life in general.  I haven't had time for months to make something for me.  Jeff was nice enough to surprise me with the material weeks ago.  Mom picked the pattern while she was here over the weekend.  Today, I MADE time to make something for me.  And it's made the whole week a little better.

So take a minute, do what you love.  Work is great, it pays the bills.  But if you don't make a moment (or a purse!) for yourself, none of it is really worth it!

We're almost there...

Just hours before the rain set it, the roof is complete!  It's cured and sealed (we hope!).  By this weekend, we'll be cleaning, updating and preparing for our first trip.  I know it's still a bit away, but I'm getting so excited!!

And just in case you're wondering, Terminix is coming on Wednesday!!!!

You're Fired!!!!

Admit it, for a quick second you thought I was Donald Trump!  No?  Well it sounded just like him in my head.

It's been the day of days.  Mom went home.  That always makes me a little sad.  Will had to work all day.  Again, makes me a little sad.  But we had a plan for the day and were determined to get it all done.

All of that came to a screeching halt when Jeff called me outside.  He confirmed with me that Terminix had done a "complete" inspection when they were here a few weeks ago.  Crap!  That was on my watch, what had he found?

Well, here it is.  Can you say OMGosh!!!  And I promise, the picture doesn't do it justice!  I will not sit on the front porch until they come back and take care of it.  Apparently, "Complete Home Inspection" did not include looking up.  Terminix, You're Fired!!

Too Much Fun!

It was another fun day in the Thomas household.  Minus a 1/2 an hour of work or so, we had a great time!  Lunch at McDonalds with Will, Iron Man, pizza, Little House...and lots of laughter, joking and fun!

I had so much fun, I forgot to take a picture.

So I'll be back tomorrow :)

A nice day.

What a nice day.  Of course any day that Mom and I get to spend together is a great day.

We spent the afternoon scouring every inch of Ikea.  We started with lunch (and a wonderful cake), covered every inch from kitchens to bedrooms to picture frames and garden.  A quick trip to Starbucks and an afternoon visit to Jeff's office closed our our tour of the city.

Since band camp finished up early, we grilled out and got to have a great dinner with Will too.  And a few episodes of Little House on the Prairie rounded out the day.

Sometimes the easiest days are the the best.  I can't wait for tomorrow :)

Not in this lifetime!

If you live around here, Kings Island is pretty much a staple in your life.  Hunter has spent more time there than I care to acknowledge.  Will...well, he's a thrill seeking junkie so he's been on every roller coaster in the park more times than I care to say.  Jeff is a master of the games - I have a million stuffed animals to prove it.  Me...I'm just a a chicken.  I get motion sickness on the rides in Hannah Barbara Land (which I think is now Nickolodeon Splash City!).  The highlight of a trip to Kings Island is a cup of Starbucks while I wait for everyone else to get off of the big kid rides.

So we've all been waiting to hear tonights big announcement.  The new ride that will replace the Son of Beast.  I have two words for it....HELL NO!  But somehow I know that Will and Jeff will be some of the first in line.

Little House

LOL, guess I'm not the only new fan of Little House on the Prairie.  It seems to be as appealing to Toccoa as DogTV.

And please ignore the floor, Toccoa is a fan of toys too!

Busy Day, Busy Night.

That's when you know that you're busy.  I have sessions to edit, custom sewing orders to complete and a set of custom designed tags that I have to get to work on.  That doesn't include invoicing, ordering, taxes (which are due NOW) and a handful of other commitments that are falling to the side.

So I sat in the craft room tonight and this was my view.  One laptop with studio work and one with custom design work...all while Jeff helped me with the paperwork part and Will put together my artist trading cards so I can scratch them off of my list.

Busy?  Yes.  Happy to be busy?  Yes.  Feeling blessed that I have a houseful of boys that will help whenever I over commit myself?  Absolutely!  I love you all!

Insert Eye Roll Here!

I love technology.  There are a million devices, inventions and tech tools out there that I think are brilliant.  But I'm the first to admit that I giggled (with a quick eye roll included) when I saw the DirecTV ad for DogTV.  I mean really, who needs this?  Isn't it bad enough that we've raised a generation of kids that's only entertainment comes from something with a video playing?

Let me tell you how my opinion changed tonight, when I got to have a completely uninterrupted dinner.  Finally, something to entertain the puppy for at least 1/2 an hour while I eat.  Don't get me wrong, she's pretty well trained.  She doesn't beg for food or wait for scraps.  She simply doesn't like to be alone so she sits with her head on my lap until we finish eating.

Until tonight.  Jeff changed the channel to DogTV and this was the result.  Just a few minutes of peace.  Thank you, DirecTV (and I'm sorry for the eye roll!).

Welcome!

As I say goodbye to Hunter today, it's so nice to know that he's being welcomed into the arms of his "new" family.  I watched him today with his friends and left with a sense of comfort.  He's where he needs to be and with people he needs to be with.  A group of young men and woman that will help him grow beyond what I can.

So welcome home Hunter!  And since I cried and missed my parting words - here they are....

Have fun.  Study hard.  Do laundry at least once a week.  Sleep at least an hour more than you think you need.  Eat more salad, but splurge on ice cream.  Make new friends but call your mom.

Just a few tips...

I've been sitting here tonight, feeling a little low as we faced Hunter's last night before heading off to Ohio State to begin yet another years adventures.  I was certain that this time would be easier...boy was I wrong.  So what to do when you need a little pick me up?  Find others to commiserate with.

In my search to confirm that I wasn't the only parent on the planet that felt like life was changing again, I ran across a blog with Tips on Sending Your Child to College.  Bingo!  There must be something there, a hidden gem, that would make me (and Hunter) feel a little better.  So I started reading...and laughing.  Maybe we're both going to be ok after all.

Tip #1 - Think about your parting words.

Parting words?  I usually just cry.  Now I won't have time to cry because I'll be thinking (way to much) about my parting words.  I guess they think I should part with something more eloquent than "Use a condom" or "Make your bed occasionally".  Crap, I'm really going to have to work on this one.

Tip #2 - Know that your lives will change.

Really?  I'm so thankful that someone pointed that out.  They starting changing when he learned to drive.  Now I have to mow the lawn, take the trash out and get my own stuff when it's in another room.  Heck, was it really necessary to list this as a tip?

Tip #3 - You won't be able to wait for them to come home (or leave).

Ok, so this one is true.  But again, it started years before he left for college.  I know they're referring to living with an adult.  One who eats on his own schedule, no longer sets an alarm and doesn't need you to help them through their day.  But I have to disagree with the leave part...I don't think you ever wait for that.

Tip #4 - Don't change your childs room.  That is their "home base".

Oh no!  I've already blown that one.  Hunters room, aka the spare bedroom, has already seen the traces of him disappear.  And what about Will?  Am I really supposed to leave that huge bonus room just the way he left it?  I've already measured it for a new sewing table, craft shelves and a kiln.  I guess home base will have to be the living room.  Anyway, are we really trying to encourage them to move back?

Tip #5 - When a problem arises, move like your feet are stuck in molasses.

No worries there.  That's how I tackle most problems.  I'm sure there are helicopter parents out there that swoop in to fix the world...but that's not me.  I'm more of a listen to the problem, make a suggestion or two and then don't answer the phone for a couple of days until the problem is corrected kind of mom.  He's an adult.

Tip #6 - Don't expect the same grades in college that they got in high school.

Ummmm, no.  High school was a job, just like college.  I don't expect perfection, but I do expect effort.  And in reality, I can't even see his grades.  Did I mention he's an adult?

Those were the tips...and by my estimation, we're doing ok.  Will it be a sad day?  Not really.  It'll be a little quieter when we get home, the dogs will mope for a few days and I'll clean his room (aka the spare bedroom) as we have a guest arriving on Friday.  He'll jump in with both feet, have a wonderful time, take chances and make a few mistakes.  But at forty, I'm still doing the same thing.

So here's my tips on sending your child off to college....

Enjoy.  Enjoy the ups, the downs, the moments they're home and the moments their away.  Show them that life is about change and the strongest people handle it with grace.  Encourage them to get involved and lead by example by getting involved in something new.  Hug them a little tighter when they leave and know that the best is still ahead.

Opinions?

A few minutes without the boys and I managed to drag Jeff to Joann's.  To be fair, we stopped at Lowes on the way.  I'm not a complete jerk.

So after much deliberation, what do you think?  These are two of the three fabrics I've picked for the camper.  I'm still looking (actually, my wonderful hubby is looking) for the coordinating solid to tie them all together.  But I think I'm in love!

What do you think?

My Point of View

Once again, gathered around the table.  Half an hour of jokes, laughter, french fries and milkshakes.  A quick trip to get Will's schedule resulted in a late night snack and lots of fun.

It's been a glorious week and we still have a few more days left.  But come next week, when the house is silent, I'll remember this moment and my heart will smile.
This is what tonight looked like from my point of view.  One loving dad, one fabulous young man and one outstanding teen that's well on his way.  I will hear the laughter long after the milkshakes have melted and the boys have disappeared off to their rooms (they are still teenagers!).
