As a photographer, I record memories for a living. I spend countless hours chasing that picture, that smile, that moment...for other families. Sadly, I've found myself forgetting to capture our memories. This blog is my way of reminding myself (and others) that days and years go by quickly. Here's my attempt to not miss a moment of it!

Dear Abby
Dear Abby,
Thank you so much for my Christmas present. I loved it when I opened it and immediately decided it should sit on my desk where I could look at it each day. It's been there for quite some time now. I'm sure you're wondering why I chose today to thank you again. Truthfully, it was a crumby day. I was sad and discouraged....until I looked over and saw that perfect present on my desk telling me to Believe in the beauty of tomorrow. So that's what I'm going to do...believe the week will get better. Believe that everything (and everyone) will be ok. Just have faith and believe. Like always, you brightened my day and I thought you should know it :)
I love you!

A Day Late
I'm always a day late to current trends...just ask Hunter. I'd live in my tennis shoes if he didn't insist that I give Sperry's a try. But when it comes to books, I try to stay up to date. I know what books are on the best sellers list and the release date of must read books in every series that Jeff, Will and I read. The only series that I was behind on was Twilight. So it's a huge surprise to me that I didn't look twice at the Hunger Games. Until the movie was coming out, I really didn't even think about it. But I thought that we'd end up watching it and I know to read the book first. It took me exactly 3 evenings to finish it and I can't wait to start the next one. Better late than never, I suppose.

Under Siege
Dart Wars is underway and Will and Shannon are fully loaded. Twenty four hours into the game and their down two players. Will's leaving at 6am to stake out the competition and hopefully eliminate the two remaining players on the other team. The good news is that they seem to be one step ahead of the others. The bad news is that Will can't walk the dog or take out the trash without a body guard.
It's been quite interesting to watch, but now I find myself looking out the windows, jumping at the slightest noise and checking out each car that slows down near our driveway. Only two more weeks.....

Sunny Days
It was a chilly morning. Funny how "average" temperatures in March seem cold when you've gotten accustomed to warm weather. But temperatures aside, it was such a pretty morning. Bright sunshine, chirping birds, squirrels playing in the yard...and the occasional stray cat. No, I haven't fed it...yet. So I grabbed my camera and sat outside. I spent hours (literally) trying to catch a picture of the cardinals. Unfortunately, our little dance continues and he refuses to come out as long as I have my camera in hand. One day, I'll catch him. But until then, I have to settle for all of the other little critters I saw today!

Draw Something
Just what we all needed, another can't put down app. Will and Hunter have been playing for a while. Jeff, Bev and I just got hooked last night. It's terrible when I took painting breaks today to check for new drawings. Digital pictionary, does it get much better than that?

Under the Furniture
I'm always confused about what I find under the furniture. Hunter's room had a million empty water bottles, apparently the trash can was too far away. My desk had several dead spiders under it, guess I should be happy they were dead. When we moved the couch, I found half a dozen pens. I didn't know we were missing any.
But no confusion today when we were crawling on the floor getting one of the dog toys out from under the entertainment center and we ran accross this. The Christmas tag is still attached. It appears we missed one when we cleaned up from the annual paper ball fight.

A day off...
Wow, the evening got away from me. Actually, most of the day got away from me. I had work to do, laundry, Zumbathon work, EFF notes, etc. Unfortunately, I just wanted to do something "fun". So I spent the day being creative, I think. I'll let you be the judge. The ATC (Artist Trading Card) swap that I signed up for was themed the "Mustache Bash". Here's my take on it. While I didn't get a lot of work done, this was much more fun - until tomorrow, when I'm behind.

Big Kids
Nothing makes you feel better than knowing that your children are doing well. The same applies to your four-legged children! It's been a hard way of going with Toccoa. We've worked harder with her than the other puppies combined. Interaction issues, fear issues, health issues, food issues, stress issues....you name it, she's troubled by it. Puppy classes twice a week along with consistent work at home have worked wonders. We've still got a long way to go, but we're making significant progress. So when the trainer moved us to the "big kid" class tonight, we were thrilled! Everyone is starting to see how wonderful the little ball of fur can be!
Oh, and sorry for the picture...they were quick and all I had was my phone!

The Celebration!
Today is one of my favorites days of the year...calender days, that is. You see, it's officially the last day of winter. To celebrate, we uncovered the grill, fired it up and had a cookout. What else would you do on an 84 degree day? Laurel and Liberty joined us and we had a wonderful family dinner. Normally, we'd be waiting for the very first signs of spring...a green bud or a clap of thunder. Instead, we've got warm days, balmy nights, fully blossomed cherry trees and bright green blades of grass.
Happy last day of winter...and Welcome Spring!!

Welcome Home!
Some days, I have a lot to say. Some days, I find myself at a loss for words (I know, hard to imagine). Today is one of the loss for words days. I sat down in front of the computer, staring at the screen. I typed a little, then started all over....at least three times. The whole family has been waiting for today, so it's not that I don't have a topic. But some things are just too special, too awesome and hit way to close to home. So in my less than eloquent blog, I simply want to say....Welcome Home Chelsea! Thank you so much for taking time out of your visit home to share an evening with us. Thank you for all you endured for to keep us all safe. And we'll all say a prayer that each and everyone one over there comes home with the same smile you did!

OMG!
Jeff and Aaron were outside walking the yard, preparing for the drainage system. We've been out there all week working, I'm not sure how we missed this. The check you see above has been in our yard since March 2nd. It traveled 130 miles in stormy weather before it fell from the sky and landed in our brush. The business that lost the check is in Henrysville, Indiana, one of the towns that sustained tremendous damage when a tornado made it's way though. It's scary to think that it was picked up and carried to us. A reminder of how blessed we are and how sorry you must feel for those that lost their lives, their homes and their businesses.
Tornado season is upon us, stay safe everyone!

Hit Home.
I'm not a big fan of commercials. I used to love them. Jingles that would stick in your head for years (I'm stuck on Bandaid, 'cause Bandaids stuck on me!), a mental wishlist of things I would like when I grew up. Then the boys were born. The harmless jingles turned into "I want that!" or "Can we go get that?" and I grew tired of commercials quickly.
Today, we don't even watch them. I have TIVO to thank for that. I don't read ad's in magazines, I turn down the radio when a sponsor or company interrupts my music. Jeff is the same way. The boys have been slowing turned to the good side, now they only watch the Superbowl ads. So when an ad catches my eye, it must be good.
Disclaimer - I'm about to sound like my mother.
This is the ad that spoke to me today. It described my childhood, Jeff's childhood and the early years of everyone I grew up with. We rode bikes for hours, built forts in the yard, caught fireflies in jars and swam in the lake until our fingers and toes looked like raisins. The bell rang to let you know when meals were served and you must come home. Until then, we were cast outside, left to find worms, dig holes, make mud pies or skip stones.
The boys started off that way. They played cowboys and indians, swung wiffle ball bats (sometimes at each other!), rode bikes and got dirty. The older they got and the more technology developed, the more they gravitated inside. Today, unless they're on the baseball field, they'd much prefer to be connected to the outside world from the comfort of their rooms.
One day, I hope they remember how much fun it is to play in the mud, blow bubbles and stick your toes in the water. I hope their children get to sled down hills of snow, build sandcastles and look for bugs. I hope one day they'll give up their PlayStation to build a play station....in a tree in the backyard.

Keep on Smiling!
For the rest of the month, the studio is hosting a contest looking for "funny faces". I thought it only appropriate to show you our favorite face. It's probably the worst picture I've ever posted on the blog, but it's the hardest image to capture. Jeff sat on the floor for some time, just hoping to get a "good enough" shot. Meet our little comedian, along with her never ending smile. It's actually an elk burr. You'll never see here without it!

Really, it's March?
An extra weekend day, the perfect midweek surprise. Jeff decided to work from home today and manage the "burn pile" while he was at it. An 80 degree day in March is something you MUST take advantage of. We were pretty sure we wouldn't get it all done, but heck, making a dent in yard work is a good thing. Who knew that we had so much to burn?
Even Toccoa got in on the fun. She had a ball, especially watching Jeff work. Same for me!
As dusk settled in, here's the end result. The boys were thrilled to come home to see it gone. Not bad for a day of sitting outside, enjoying the warm air, getting a little sun, smelling like a campfire and laughing with Jeff. And only two more days until Saturday...when we get to do it again.
PS...Happy Birthday Uncle Charlie! Hope you had a wonderful time on your "big" day!

Here and then gone.
Baby fish, everywhere. At first count, Will found seven. While he was babysitting them, we lost one (to a hungry paradise fish). At last count before bed, he couldn't find any. We're all hoping they found a safe spot, but not holding our breath. We'll check again in the morning, maybe one will make it through the night.

Too Early for Thanksgiving?
As always, life in the Thomas house was unusual and exciting today. The boys have delayed starts all week, so they were here this morning when I noticed a strange pair of legs in the yard. I'm used to deer and I probably wouldn't have been overly surprised to see a coyote. The legs were a little too thin for either of those. Instead, here's what we found....

What You Learned Today....
Since I know that this will be our dinner table conversation today, I thought I would share with you what we all learned today. If you choose to believe it is up to you.
According to Wikipedia (our source for all things!), dowsing is a type of divination employed in attempts to locate ground water, buried metals or ores, gemstones, oil, grave sites and many other objects and materials. It dates back to Renaissance magic in Germany. Traditionally, a dowsing rod was a "Y" shaped branch from a tree or bush. Today, the most common dowsing rod is made of of two metal "L" shaped rods. To date, there are no scientific reasons for the accuracy of dowsing, nor are there any studies showing it's effectiveness and accuracy.
Why do I know so much about dowsing? Because for several days, Jeff has been trying to locate a water pipe that runs across the backyard. Truthfully, he's been trying to locate it for a few months. Since we're having the drain line dug in the next week or two, it was imperative that we find it so we didn't destroy it (and the septic system) when digging. Yesterday, Jeff took to digging in the yard by hand, in an attempt to locate it. All with no luck.
So when he came out this morning with two metal rods, Will and I laughed at him. I laughed for some time, explaining how ridiculous he was going to look, wandering through the yard, hoping the metal rods would direct him to the pipe. Will followed him around, laughing the whole time. Let me tell you, we only laughed for a minute. When the rods crossed, we were a little taken aback. And when Jeff dug in the same spot and the pipe was right there...we were a little creeped out. Hunter thought it was awesome when it worked the second, third and fourth times too.
I don't know what to think about it. I would like to think there was some scientific explanation....but since the scientists can't find one, I can't either. Maybe he just had a little Renaissance magic working for us today.

Sunshine
A sunny Saturday afternoon in March...before daylight savings time. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping and Will, Jeff and I were working in the yard. Partially because we had to (graduation is right around the corner) but more because we couldn't pass up an afternoon of warm sun on our faces. Other than a minor technical problem with the chain saw, it was a perfect afternoon. The new beds are laid out, the uprooted trees are cut up and Will shoveled more than a ton of river rock. Progress. Tomorrow looks even nicer...and Hunter will be home to join us. Finally, Spring has arrived.

TGIF
I've tried to come up with something witty and creative to blog about tonight. Unfortunately, the only thing I can jump up and down over is the fact it's Friday. What an incredibly long week. And the weekend isn't looking much more relaxing. Funerals, InterAlliance trips at 5am, two tons of river rock being delivered...should I keep going? At least my alarm clock won't be going off...unless the puppy continues her 4am ritual for the third night. Oh well, did I mention it's Friday?

Another Baby...
That's what it's like having a puppy in the house. Especially when said puppy is up sick all night. It stated at 1am, got much worse at 4am and has continued through out the day. I'm EXHAUSTED! That's when you know that you're getting old.
Here she is after her second bath of the day. Let's hope it's the last one!

That Time Again?
Hunter is lucky enough to be first. I know that he doesn't think so, but that's because he's not second. As the first, you get more responsibility. Watch your brother, you're older/you know better...if you're the oldest, you've heard them all. And as the oldest, you get me getting all teary eyed at all of the firsts. First dance, first trophy, first girlfriend, first graduation.
What no one (except Will) has figured out is that being second is harder. Because he's not just second, he's last. So he's the last dance, the last trophy and last girlfriend and the last graduation. All of which are exciting occasions, just a little more teary eyed than the first ones.
So who can believe that we were standing in line tonight, just like we did years ago, ordering the last class ring. And there were no tears, just laughter and fun. Will is going to love his ring, even though it doesn't have the Philadelphia Eagles logo on it. Oh my, the class of 2015...that now seems like it's right around the corner.

Super Tuesday
I find good customer service to be rare anymore. Actually, I find adequate customer service to be just as rare. That's what made today just a little more special.
Hunter will be 18 in a few months. Just four months before the next presidential election. He's been waiting for years to vote so imagine how excited he was when he found out that he could vote in the primary. It was news to all of us. Ohio law allows anyone eligible to vote in the presidential election the opportunity to vote in the primary...even if you are still seventeen.
So today was the big day. We got up at the crack of dawn to make sure that we could get it in together, before school. Hunter was all prepared, until we walked in and couldn't remember which precinct we live in. Thankfully, there were four WONDERFUL poll volunteers waiting to help. Truthfully, they were waiting for Hunter to arrive....they actually were.
When he walked in, they asked if he was the 17 year old voter they were waiting for. They'd been waiting all morning to see who he was. Hunter was the only seventeen year old voter in the precinct and they were so very proud of him for coming out to vote. They walked him through the whole process, helped him with the instructions, gave him a tour of the booth and promised to hand deliver his ballot to the board of elections as required. It was the nicest, most rewarding voting experience ever. Customer service at its finest!
Hunter was still grinning when he got home from school today, still proudly displaying his sticker. It was a great day, one I'm so glad I got to share with him.

Ah Choooooo!
Seasonal allergies stink. I can't breathe, Hunters ears are popping, sneezing is the most common sound in our house. While we're all thankful for a mild winter, it seems to have brought about allergy season a little earlier than normal. I'm hoping that means it'll be over soon...however things haven't even started to bloom. My nose can't take much more!

Sunday
There are so many things to love about Sundays. No alarm. Endless supplies of coffee. The smell of fabric softener filling the house. It's the little things in life that make me smile.
But nothing makes me smile more than a surprise visit from the boys. Unfortunately, their Sunday wasn't quite as relaxing as ours. They both had a great time at TechOlympics, but it definitely took a toll on them both. As you can see.
I'm guessing the'll be in bed at an early hour...and hopefully they'll get caught up by next Sunday.

TechOlympics
What better way to spend your weekend than playing with legos, competing in speed texting competitions and hanging out with hundreds of teenagers in the area. Both of the boys are at the TechOlympics this weekend. Hunter is there in "official" InterAlliance work mode and Will is there as a participant. I'm sure both of them are having a great time. In my last update, I found out Will placed third overall in the Lego Robotics competition and is thrilled with it. Hunter is probably busy chasing teens back to their rooms at curfew time. Hope they're having a great time, can't wait to hear all about it tomorrow.

The Severe Threat
When it rains, it pours. Literally.
It was our second day this week to include unseasonable storms ripping thorough the area. The first day left little damage, little rain and few downed branched. Today was a little different. Within 50 miles, there were tornadoes, baseball sized hail and sirens galore. Thankfully, we made it though unscathed but we'll have to see what the wind tonight brings (or brings down!).
Good things the boys are safe and sound downtown at the Millinium Hotel enjoying the first night of TechJam.

It Never Gets Old
I love days like today. I took off with the sun shining in my eyes and spent the day scouring the antique stores in Loveland and Lebanon looking for the perfect prop. There were some great finds today...they just have to be cleaned before I can show them to you. Guess I know what I'll be doing this weekend...once I track down some lime green spray paint!
